Earthing, Say Whaatttt?!?!

At the end of my Putting Life Back Into Life blog post, I mentioned I was using an earthing mat, and that I would be dedicating a post solely to it.

If you haven’t tried Earthing, then I insist that you give it a try! It is a bit mind-blowing. I received an Earthing mat in the mail last month, and it’s all I can think about.

This is a bit out there, but hey, what have I talked about on here that isn’t at least a tiny bit unorthodox? Don’t knock something unless you try it, and if you find something that works for you, then do it with pride.

So what is Earthing?

This is it in a nutshell: For thousands of years, humans were in direct contact with the earth’s energy. Today, we live most of our lives indoors, and when we are outside, we are usually wearing shoes—which are most likely made of materials that are poor conductors, and this inhibits the health benefits that we could be getting from earth’s energy. When you have a direct connection with the earth, your body’s positive charge is reduced to zero, aka you are “grounded”. When you become grounded, every cell in your body is grounded, and your body can start healing at a cellular level. Free radicals will be able to leave your body.

Remember what free radicals are?

Think back to your high school science class. Free radicals are molecules that are missing an electron. Not all free radicals are harmful, but most are. Generally speaking, free radicals are unstable and can attack the body’s building elements. By becoming grounded, electrons are released to the free radicals, and they become neutralized. This is why some call Earthing the most powerful antioxidant.

What are the health benefits?

Some of the health benefits include:

  • Reduced inflammation
  • Improved sleep and sleep patterns
  • Decreased pain
  • Better energy levels
  • Improved blood pressure
  • Headache and muscle relief
  • Accelerated healing
  • Reduced menstrual and hormonal symptoms, fewer PMS symptoms, fewer menopausal hot flashes
  • Improved digestion
  • Reduced stress

In order to have health benefits from Earthing, your connection to the earth must be consistent. Most people do not have the time or the proper environment to walk outside barefoot for hours each day. Luckily you can buy Earthing mats, which allow you to stay grounded anywhere there is an electrical outlet. Depending on what’s going on with you, some people will notice the benefits with just a few hours of earthing per day, while others will require a longer time.

I don’t own a multi-meter, but luckily I have an electrician friend who let me borrow his, and he didn’t look at me too strangely when I explained to him why I needed to use it! In the photos above, I am in my living room and you can see my body voltage is 1.009. When using the band, it is lowered to 0.035, and when using the mat, it is lowered to 0.000. I do notice that the mat seems to do a better job at completely grounding me, if my body voltage is high to begin with (if I am around electronics for example). Near my TV, it lowered it substantially, although not completely 0.00, but in my bedroom, while I am sleeping, my body voltage is lower to begin with, and the band lowers me to 0.00. I also tested my body voltage around my office, and in some areas it was as high as 5.000!

I bought my earthing mat here. I researched several companies before deciding who to purchase from, and I would recommend this company above any others I looked into. They are incredibly friendly, SUPERB customer service, and they took time to educate me, provide me with resources, and answer any questions I had. The mat also comes with a wrist band. I use the mat mainly while I am at work- if I’m at my desk, I will slip my shoes off and place my feet on top of it. Some people like to place the mat below their keyboard so that their wrists come into contact with the mat. You can also place the mat at the foot of your bed to receive earthing benefits while you sleep. I prefer to wear the band at night. So it’s safe to say I am grounded at least 7 hours a day, and if I’m at my desk a lot at work, that number is closer to 12 hours a day. I feel fantastic. I’ve been telling people that a lot lately. And it feels great to say that!

So just remember, we are electrically functioning creatures. Our heart, brain, nerves, even thoughts, function through electrical means. And our earth contains an unlimited supply of free electrons—just waiting for you to use them! So give it a try, even if it means spending more time outdoors and barefoot!
